Winding Bars & Tools
Winding Bars & Tools
Professional-grade winding bars, spring tools, and specialty hardware for garage door service and installation.
⚠️ DANGER: Torsion Springs Can Kill
Winding bars are used to adjust torsion springs under extreme tension. A standard residential torsion spring holds enough force to cause serious injury or death if it releases unexpectedly. This is not a typical DIY project.
These tools are intended for trained professionals or experienced DIYers who fully understand the risks and proper procedures. If you have any doubt, please call us for professional service.
About Winding Bars
Winding bars are solid steel rods used to wind and unwind torsion springs. Using the correct bars is critical for safety.
Why Proper Bars Matter
Never substitute screwdrivers, rebar, or other makeshift tools. They can slip out of the winding cone, releasing the spring violently.
- Proper diameter for secure fit
- Solid steel won't bend under load
- Correct length for leverage and control
- Smooth finish prevents snagging
Winding Bar Sizes
Match the bar diameter to your winding cone holes. Most residential springs use one of these sizes:
- 1/2" diameter – Standard residential
- 9/16" diameter – Some commercial
- 18" length – Most common
- 24" length – More leverage for larger springs
Always Use Two Bars
Proper technique requires two winding bars – one to hold the spring while inserting the second. Never remove both bars at once.
- One bar always stays in the cone
- Alternate bars as you wind/unwind
- Keep firm grip and proper stance
- Work slowly and deliberately
