Garage Door Off Track? Houston Repair, Same Day When Available
A garage door off its track is unsafe to operate – don't force it. We get doors back on track and rolling safely across the Houston area. Call and we'll walk you through making it safe until we arrive.
Don't Operate a Door That's Off Track
When a garage door jumps its track, running the opener can pull it further off, bend more track, snap a cable, or drop the door. Stop using it, don't try to force it level, and keep people and vehicles clear until it's repaired. A door off track is also under spring tension – leave the springs and cables alone and call a professional. Contact us for a service quote.
What "Off Track" Actually Means
Your garage door rides up and down on rollers that sit inside steel tracks on each side. "Off track" means one or more rollers have come out of that track – so the door hangs crooked, jams, sticks partway, or in the worst case comes loose from the tracks entirely. Once a door is off track, the weight is no longer supported the way it's designed to be, which is why forcing it usually makes the damage worse.
Preferred Doors LLC is a family-owned company – in business since 1995, serving Houston since 2010. We get doors back on track, replace bent track and worn rollers, and check the springs, cables, and balance so the door doesn't come off again. We also service automatic gates – same trained crew, same trucks.
Why Garage Doors Come Off Track
A few causes account for most off-track doors we see in the Houston area:
A Vehicle Backed Into It
More common than people think – a car backing out at an angle clips the vertical track and bends it off the jamb, and the door binds or won't move. A bent track is usually best replaced rather than straightened, because a kinked track leaves weak spots that bind and wear the rollers down the road. We replace the damaged section and re-secure it to the framing.
A Broken or Frayed Cable
The lift cables on each side keep the door square as it travels. When one snaps or slips off its drum, that side drops, the door goes crooked, and rollers pop out of the track. We replace the cables in pairs and reset them on the drums so the door lifts evenly again.
Worn-Out or Broken Rollers
Rollers wear out, seize up, or break apart over years of use – especially the cheap plastic ones. A failed roller jams in the track or falls out of it, and the door derails. We replace worn rollers (we prefer sealed nylon rollers, which run quieter and last far longer) and check the rest while we're there.
A Broken Spring Threw It Off Balance
When a torsion or extension spring breaks, the door loses its counterbalance and can slam down or hang unevenly, pulling rollers out of the track. If your door came off track and you heard a loud bang, a broken spring is a likely culprit. See our lifetime warranty spring options.
Loose, Bent, or Misaligned Track
Track brackets work loose over time, or the track gets knocked out of alignment, and the gap between roller and track opens up until the door jumps out. We realign the track, tighten or replace brackets, and re-secure everything to the framing so the door tracks straight.
How We Get Your Door Back on Track
Diagnose the Cause
We find out why it came off – cable, roller, spring, track, or impact – so we fix the cause, not just reset the door to come off again.
Reset & Repair
We safely reseat the door, replace bent track, broken cables, or worn rollers, and re-secure the track to the framing.
Test Balance & Safety
We check spring balance, cable tension, and opener force, and test the door through a full cycle so it runs smooth and safe.

Can I use my garage door if it's off track?
No – stop using it. Running the opener on an off-track door can bend more track, snap a cable, or drop the door, turning a small repair into a big one. Leave it where it is and call us.
My car bumped the track – can it be straightened?
Usually it's best to replace the bent section rather than straighten it. A kinked track can be bent back, but the weak spot tends to bind and wear the rollers over time. Replacing it is a clean, lasting fix and often done the same visit.
Do I need a whole new door?
Almost never. Most off-track doors are fixed by replacing track, rollers, or cables and resetting the door – not replacing the whole thing. We'll tell you honestly if a panel is too damaged to save, but that's the exception.
Why did my door come off track in the first place?
The usual causes are a broken cable, a worn or broken roller, a broken spring, a loose or misaligned track, or a vehicle impact. We diagnose which one it was so the fix actually holds instead of the door coming off again.
Do you service my area?
We serve the greater Houston area, including Katy, Cypress, Sugar Land, Richmond, the Energy Corridor, and the surrounding communities. Call 281-579-8400 and we'll confirm scheduling.
