Garage Door Won't Open or Close? Houston Repair

Stuck open, stuck shut, or stopping halfway? It's usually one of a handful of causes – and most are fixable same day when available. We diagnose it right and get your door moving again across the Houston area.

A Door That Won't Move Has a Few Likely Causes

When a garage door won't open or won't close, the cause usually falls into one of a few buckets – the opener, the springs, the safety sensors, the remote or keypad, or the door itself binding. The good news is that most are straightforward to diagnose and fix. The trick is figuring out which one it is, because the fix for a broken spring is nothing like the fix for a misaligned sensor.

Preferred Doors LLC is a family-owned company – in business since 1995, serving Houston since 2010. We diagnose the actual cause, carry the common parts on our trucks, and get most doors moving again in one visit. We also service automatic gates – same trained crew, same trucks.

If Your Door Won't OPEN

The most common reasons a door refuses to open:

A Broken Spring (Most Common)

If you heard a loud bang and now the door won't budge – or the opener strains, hums, and lifts only a few inches – you almost certainly have a broken spring. The springs do the heavy lifting; the opener can't raise the door without them. This is the single most common "won't open" cause. See our lifetime warranty springs.

Opener or Power Problem

No sound at all when you press the button? Check that the opener has power and the wall button works – then it may be a dead opener, a failed logic board, or a tripped GFCI. We repair and replace openers of all major brands.

Off Track or Jammed

If the door is crooked, bound up, or visibly out of its tracks, it won't open until that's corrected – and forcing it makes it worse. See our off-track repair page.

If Your Door Won't CLOSE

A door that opens fine but won't close – or closes partway then reverses – is usually the safety system:

Blocked or Misaligned Safety Sensors (Most Common)

The photo-eye sensors near the floor on each side stop the door closing on a person, pet, or object. If they're dirty, knocked out of alignment, or blocked – or if a sensor light is blinking – the opener refuses to close and the door reverses. This is the number-one "won't close" cause. Often it's a quick clean-and-realign; sometimes a failed sensor needs replacing.

Close-Force or Travel Limit Set Wrong

If the opener's travel limits or force settings are off, it thinks the door hit something before it reaches the floor and reverses. We reset the limits and force to spec so it closes fully and safely.

Obstruction or Track Issue

A bent track, a loose roller, or debris in the track can stop a door from closing all the way. We find what's binding and clear or repair it.

If It's the Remote or Keypad

Remote Won't Work

If the wall button works but the remote doesn't, it's often a dead battery or lost programming. If nothing works, the issue is at the opener. We reprogram or replace remotes and keypads.

Keypad Stopped Responding

Keypads lose programming, wear out, or take a dead battery. We get it working again or replace it with a current model.

Garage Door Won't Open or Close FAQ

My door won't open and the opener just hums or strains. Why?

That's the classic sign of a broken spring. The springs counterbalance the door's weight; without them the opener can't lift it and will strain, hum, or raise it only a few inches. Don't keep running the opener – you can burn it out. Call us for a spring repair.

My door starts to close then goes back up. What's wrong?

Almost always the safety sensors. If a photo eye is dirty, misaligned, or blocked, the opener thinks something is in the way and reverses the door for safety. Check that the little lights on both sensors are steady – a blinking one is the clue. We clean, realign, or replace them.

Nothing happens at all when I press the button. Is the opener dead?

Maybe – but first check power: a tripped GFCI outlet or unplugged opener is a common, simple cause. If it has power and still does nothing from both the wall button and remote, it may be a failed logic board or motor, and we can repair or replace the opener.

Only my remote stopped working – the wall button still works. Why?

If the wall button works but the remote doesn't, the opener is fine – it's the remote. Usually a dead battery or lost programming. We can reprogram it or replace it.
