Tracks and Brackets
Garage Door Tracks & Brackets
Vertical tracks, horizontal tracks, flag brackets, and mounting hardware. Keep your door running straight and true.
Understanding Your Track System
Your garage door rides on a track system that guides it from closed to open. Here are the main components.
Vertical Tracks
Mounted on each side of the door opening. Guide the door straight up before it curves into the horizontal section.
- Left and right are mirror images
- Standard 2" track for most residential
- Must match door thickness
- Attached with flag brackets
Horizontal Tracks
Run along the ceiling, supporting the door when open. Includes curved section that connects to vertical tracks.
- Length based on door height
- Hung from ceiling with angle brackets
- Slight slope toward back (for closing)
- Standard and low-headroom options
Flag Brackets
Mount vertical tracks to the door jamb. Called "flag" brackets because of their shape. Critical for proper alignment.
- Top and bottom brackets differ
- Adjustable for fine-tuning alignment
- Heavy-gauge steel construction
- Include mounting hardware
Choosing the Right Track Size
Track width must match your door and roller size. Here's how to identify what you need.
2" Track (Standard)
Most common residential size. Works with standard 2" rollers. Fits doors up to about 1-3/4" thick.
3" Track (Heavy-Duty)
For thicker insulated doors, wood carriage doors, or commercial applications. Uses 3" rollers.
Not Sure? Measure It
Measure the inside width of your existing track, or check your roller diameter. Call us with measurements and we'll help.
Signs of Track Problems
Track issues can cause binding, noise, and unsafe operation. Here's what to watch for.
Bent or Dented Track
Impact damage from vehicles or objects. Even small dents can cause rollers to bind or jump the track.
Misaligned Tracks
Tracks not plumb or level cause uneven gaps, binding, and excessive wear on rollers and hinges.
Loose Brackets
Rattling or vibration during operation. Tracks pulling away from the wall or ceiling.
Rust or Corrosion
Rusty tracks create friction and wear out rollers faster. Common in coastal or humid areas.
DIY Note: Track Work Requires Care
Replacing brackets or adjusting alignment is doable for handy DIYers. However, replacing entire track sections while the door is installed requires proper support and can be dangerous. The door must be secured and properly supported. If you're not confident, contact us for professional installation.
