Struts & Perforated Angle
Struts & Perforated Angle
Reinforce your garage door and create solid mounting points. Prevent panel bowing and add structural support where you need it.
Understanding Struts
Struts are horizontal steel reinforcements that attach to the back of your garage door panels. They prevent bowing and add rigidity.
Top Strut (Opener Reinforcement)
The most critical strut. Reinforces the top panel where the opener bracket attaches. Required for opener installation on most doors.
- Prevents top panel from bending
- Distributes opener force across panel
- Usually 1-1/2" or 2" tall
- Must span full door width
Mid-Panel Struts
Additional struts for middle panels. Common on wider doors (16'+) or doors showing signs of bowing.
- Prevents wind damage on wide doors
- Corrects existing panel bow
- Adds rigidity to lightweight panels
- Recommended for hurricane zones
When You Need Struts
Signs your door could benefit from strut reinforcement:
- Installing a new opener
- Visible panel bowing
- Door wider than 14 feet
- Wind-prone or hurricane area
- Non-insulated steel panels
Measuring for Struts
Getting the right size strut is simple. Here's what you need to know.
Length = Door Width
Measure your door opening width. Struts come in standard sizes: 8', 9', 10', 12', 14', 16', and 18'. Order the size matching your door.
Height Options
Standard struts are 1-1/2" or 2" tall. Taller struts provide more rigidity. For most residential doors, 1-1/2" is sufficient.

About Perforated Angle
Perforated angle (also called slotted angle or punched angle) is versatile steel hardware with pre-drilled holes for easy mounting.
Track Hanging
Supports horizontal tracks from ceiling joists. Adjustable mounting positions let you fine-tune track alignment.
Opener Mounting
Create custom brackets for opener installation. Works great when ceiling joists don't align with your opener.
Custom Brackets
Build custom solutions for unique installations. Can be cut to length and bolted together at any angle.
Reinforcement
Brace framing, reinforce jambs, or add structural support wherever needed around your garage door system.
DIY Tip: Installing Struts
Strut installation is a manageable DIY project. Work with the door down and disconnected from the opener. Position the strut horizontally across the panel, centered on the panel's height. Use self-tapping screws (typically #10 x 3/4") through the strut holes into the panel. Space screws every 12-18 inches. For opener reinforcement struts, attach the opener bracket through both the strut and the panel for maximum strength.
