Choosing the Right Rollers

Rollers make a huge difference in how your door sounds and feels. Here's what you need to know about each type.

Getting the Right Size

Rollers come in different stem lengths and wheel diameters. Here's how to measure yours:

Stem Length

Measure from the wheel to the end of the stem. Standard residential is 4" (short stem) or 7" (long stem). Commercial doors use longer stems.

Wheel Diameter

Most residential doors use 2" diameter wheels. Heavier or commercial doors may use 3" wheels for better load distribution.

How Many?

Standard residential doors have 10-12 rollers. Count yours before ordering. We recommend replacing all at once for even wear.

Signs You Need New Rollers

Worn rollers are one of the most common causes of noisy, jerky garage doors.

Grinding or Squeaking

Metal-on-metal sounds mean bearings are worn or rollers need lubrication/replacement.

Jerky Movement

Door shakes, vibrates, or moves unevenly. Often caused by flat spots or damaged rollers.

Visible Wear

Cracked nylon, chipped wheels, or wobbly rollers are signs they've reached end of life.

Door Age 7+ Years

Even if they look okay, older rollers benefit from replacement. It's cheap insurance.

DIY Tip: Safe Roller Replacement

Most rollers can be replaced without releasing spring tension – just remove the hinge, swap the roller, and reinstall. However, the bottom bracket rollers are connected to the lift cables and spring system. Leave those to a professional unless you're experienced with spring work.
