Lubricants
Garage Door Lubricants
Professional-grade lubricants to keep your garage door running smooth and quiet. The easiest maintenance you can do – takes 5 minutes twice a year.
What to Lubricate
Regular lubrication reduces noise, prevents rust, and extends the life of your door's moving parts. Here's where to apply it.
Springs
Coat torsion springs along their entire length. Prevents rust and helps maintain flexibility. Do NOT spray the torsion tube itself.
Hinges
Apply to the pivot points where hinges bend. This is often where squeaking originates. A little goes a long way.
Rollers
Lubricate the bearings on steel rollers. Skip sealed nylon rollers – they're maintenance-free. Just do the metal ones.
Bearing Plates
The round plates at each end of the torsion spring shaft. Spray the center where the shaft rotates through the bearing.
Lock & Latch
If your door has a manual lock or slide bolt, a quick spray keeps it operating smoothly. Especially helpful in humid climates.
Opener Rail
For chain or screw drive openers, lightly lubricate the rail. Belt drive openers don't need rail lubrication.
What NOT to Use
WD-40
It's a solvent, not a lubricant. Actually strips away existing lubrication and attracts dirt.
Grease on Tracks
Never grease the tracks. Attracts dirt and gums up. Rollers should ride clean in the track.
Motor Oil
Too thin and drips everywhere. Makes a mess and doesn't stay where you need it.
Choosing the Right Lubricant
National Door Industries makes the lubricants trusted by professionals. Here's which one to choose.
400-HD Heavy Duty
Best all-around choice for most homeowners. Non-silicone formula won't attract dust. Penetrates and protects. The "Tune Up In A Can" we use on service calls.
400-XD Xtreme Duty
Stronger formula for commercial doors, high-cycle applications, or if you want extra protection. Citrus-scented, non-silicone. Great for pros or heavy use.
900 White Lithium
PTFE-fortified white lithium grease. Thicker formula that stays in place. Best for springs and heavy-load bearings. Won't run, wash off, or freeze.
DIY Tip: Quick Maintenance Schedule
Lubricate your garage door twice a year – once in spring and once in fall. Takes about 5 minutes. While you're at it, wipe down the tracks with a dry cloth (don't lubricate them) and check for loose hardware. This simple routine can add years to your door's lifespan.
