Understanding Hinge Numbers
Garage door hinges are numbered based on their position on the door. Using the right hinge in each position ensures smooth operation and proper panel alignment.
#1 Hinge
Position: Between bottom panel and second panel
Feature: Flat design, mounts flush on both sides
Quantity: 2-3 per door (depending on width)
#2 Hinge
Position: Between second and third panels
Feature: Offset design for track clearance
Quantity: 2-3 per door (depending on width)
#3 Hinge
Position: Between third and fourth panels
Feature: Greater offset than #2
Quantity: 2-3 per door (depending on width)
#4 Hinge (Top)
Position: Top panel (4-panel doors)
Feature: Maximum offset, includes top fixture bracket
Quantity: 2 per door (left and right ends only)
End Hinges
Position: Left and right edges of each panel
Feature: Include roller stem holder
Quantity: 2 per panel joint (one each side)
Center Hinges
Position: Middle of panel joints (wide doors)
Feature: No roller stem, just pivots panels
Quantity: 1 per joint on 16'+ wide doors
Choosing the Right Gauge
Hinges come in different thicknesses (gauges). Heavier doors need heavier-gauge hinges.
18-Gauge (Light)
Builder-grade hinges for lightweight single-car doors. Most economical but shortest lifespan. Fine for basic steel doors.
14-Gauge (Standard)
Professional-grade for most residential doors. Good balance of durability and cost. What we install on service calls.
11-Gauge (Heavy)

Worn Pivot Holes
Elongated or egg-shaped holes where the roller stem sits cause sloppy movement and noise.
Uneven Panel Gaps
